Get Off the Business Roller Coaster

We all love a thrill, sometimes…

We live near a Carowinds Amusement Park. It is a hot spot to visit during the summer months and then select weekends. Right now they have converted it to “SCarowinds” for Holloween. The main attractions are their multiple roller coaster rides. My kids love going there.

They love the exhilaration, the excitement, the anticipation as the cars climb higher and higher. Then the rush of fear and adrenaline as they drop down and swoosh around the curves and loops. Finally, coming to a stop and getting off, with a new appreciation for solid ground.

These Roller Coasters can be a lot of fun! 

But, how about the ones that show up in your Business? Probably, NOT so much! 

You know…the thrill of getting a new client. The panic when you lose one. Not so much fun. 

When you are starting out in your business or you are still in the early stages, the highs and lows can be pretty extreme and the solid ground is more like shifting sand. But, everyone in business experiences this. Everyone! 

So, how do you get from that sometimes intensely scary place of “where will the next dollar or client come from” to some basic stability in your business?

Two words… YOUR LIST! 

Now, I can see your eyes rolling, (I am intuitive, you know), because everyone says the money is in your list. It sounds like a bunch of hype sometimes. Especially, when you hear it surrounded with incredible promises of quick, easy money. (THAT is hype, by the way.) 

But the reality is…it is true. When you strip away the hype, the fact remains that the more people you have on your list, the more people you have to engage, to reach out to, to offer your services to. AND, the more people you offer your services to, the more chances you have of finding the ones that are ready and wanting to work with you. 

When your list is small, the ups and downs of your business are magnified considerably. Think about it…if you have one client and you get one client, Whoo Hoo you have doubled your income! However, if you have two clients and you lose one, YIKES, your income is cut in half. On the flip side, say you have a larger list, and you have one client. You offer a special and because you are offering it to a larger list, you get 2 new clients. Whoo Hoo, now you have increased your income by 2/3rds. Then if you lose one client, your income has only dropped 1/3rd. 

These are pretty simplistic examples, but here comes the really important piece I want you to get… read them again and pay attention to how you feel when you read them.

I would bet when you read the first one you can sense the anxiety and powerlessness that goes with it. This is where self-doubt hangs out. Just waiting to unleash a barrage of dis-empowering affirmations like…you can’t do this, no one wants what you have, no one will pay you what you are worth, blah, blah, blah. 

I know from personal experience, been there, done that. It takes a LOT of your valuable energy to pull yourself out of the “Funk.” Whew, it is tiring just thinking about it. Now, do the same thing with the second example. There is a little more stability and cushion there. The energy of it is just a little bit lighter and the “Doubt Creeper,” is kept farther away. 

What is that worth to you? 

To me, it is worth a lot! It is empowering. It is the peace of mind. It allows more creativity and enthusiasm in my business. I want that for you too!
